The information environment is a set of hardware and software for storing, processing and transmitting information, as well as political, economic and cultural conditions for the implementation of informatization processes.

The information environment is the world of information around a person and the world of his information activity.

The information environment is a sphere of activity of subjects connected with creation, transformation, consumption of the information.

The latter definitions are clearer. They clearly reflect the work of the school library.

Many believe that connecting to the Internet in the classroom is all it takes to transform a 20th century school into a 21st century learning space. Too many teachers believe that because young people can push buttons, they are information literate. If everything was so simple. Some suggest that ICTs, in particular the Internet, are making school libraries obsolete and seen as an alternative. There is little room for the concept of a library as a multimedia resource center that offers access to a wide world of information and knowledge through a number of channels.

Consider some of the information and communication technologies that are changing our way of life. The Internet provides direct access to vast information resources. Mobile devices provide instant communication anytime, anywhere. Technological tools that have become part of our daily lives have a great advantage for people all over the world. However, there is a downside to these fantastic devices. Our children easily and thoughtlessly post personal information and photos on Facebook, “Classmates”, “VKontakte”, which become part of the review, public discussion. Obviously, learning the latest technologies is not productive, because technology is constantly changing. Young people learn these new technologies easily and practically without formal training. Mastering new devices is not a difficult part of using information technology. The hard part is learning to use technology for creativity and education.

School libraries are an important source of information related to the curriculum. They must become a dynamic learning center. Librarians have training and experience in how to find, evaluate and use information. Working in a team with teachers, the librarian can create the necessary climate for cognition, creativity and learning in the information environment. Students need significant guidance and intervention throughout the process. Without guidance, they often approach the process as a simple collection of information, resulting in copying and pasting with little editing.

With guidance, children have the opportunity to focus on gaining new knowledge and gain personal understanding and skills in the investigation process. Students must learn to formulate meaningful questions, evaluate different points of view, and use a wide range of resources in their research. In addition, 21st century students need to demonstrate their understanding in a new way, through their own videos or multimedia presentations. That is why every school library needs to rethink and restructure the style of work and teaching from what contains only lectures to a flexible learning space that supports several styles and directions. Remember that we do not work in a book warehouse.

In the conditions of rapid technological changes, the primary task for the school library is to transform it from a center for gathering resources and access to information, into a center for research, discovery, creativity and innovative pedagogy. This brings to the fore the following levels of implementation of information technology in the activities of school libraries:

expanding the range of library services and providing access to electronic resources; introduction of automated information and library systems; accumulation and organization of electronic resources; creation of own digital resources; creation of sites / electronic libraries; use of ICT to promote books and reading; formation of information literacy; integration of library products and services into the information and educational space of the school.

Our children are no longer interested in ordinary book exhibitions, a virtual, multimedia exhibition is much more interesting for them. And this can be explained. We ourselves pay attention to the bright, interesting advertising, which involves celebrities. Advertisers are trying to get our attention with all sorts of promotions. That’s why librarians should become merchandisers, able to interest young people, maintain the image of the school library.

Innovative models of school libraries are not a luxury, but a necessity that takes into account modern realities.
